Nivea comes from the Latin word for ‘snow white’ (niveus/nivea/niveum). When I was kid I snuck into my grandmother’s room and discovered what I thought was how all the white people in movies stayed white. Nope, it was just a can of Nivea.
These tin tops span 133 years and obviously went through the Modernist period in stride. But I’m a sucker for those Art Nouveau-based curls on the first two designs.
